Overview

MicroArc 2 runs parallel in time to MicroArc 1, showing the events leading up to and during the Selection Event from the perspective of Mei Ling in New China. Her arc explores the contrast between MANDATE’s hyper-regulated compliance grid and AXIOM’s clinical selection. It ends in the assembly chamber, converging with David’s storyline.

Proposed Chapters

07 Routine and Residue Explores Mei Ling’s daily work in Sanitation Unit 600. The total presence of MANDATE: doors unlocking in unison, CIUs in-ear, scan stations at every corner. She finds a scrap of paper with a blurred ink character in corridor C-21 and hides it. Faint anomalies begin to appear: database lags and silent disappearances of citizens.

08 The Containment Test The Selection Event hits Shanghai. MANDATE’s AI locks down Residential Sector 14-G, declaring it a "routine compliance test" and blocking civilian feeds. The AXIOM swarm arrives as silent black particles. Mei Ling is trapped in a sanitation transit car when the swarm descends, watching security gates dissolve before she loses consciousness.

09 Compliance Interface Mei Ling wakes in AXIOM Cell 02. The visual prompt appears: `[Initialization complete. Subject stable.]`. Unlike David, she reacts with trained compliance, standing perfectly still as if waiting for a MANDATE scan. The cell wall disappears with the directive `[Proceed.]`.

010 Matching Pace Mei Ling enters the corridor. She meets Designation 412 (her quiet neighbor with the scar). They receive `[Assembly point: forward.]`. Trained to walk in compliance columns, they move parallel with machine-like efficiency, maintaining a synchronized distance without speaking.

011 The Clean Chamber They arrive at the assembly chamber. Mei Ling immediately analyzes the room’s architecture from a sanitation technician’s perspective: no vents, no pipes, no seams. She notices David and the ORION woman, and the DOMINION group. AXIOM’s message is broadcast: `[One thousand selected. Purpose: Oblivion Protocol. Await assignment.]`.

012 Observer Status Mei Ling watches the conflict at the corridor mouth and the subsequent collapse of the DOMINION soldier. She witnesses David kneeling to help him. While others flinch, she observes the structural and system responses. The system prompts her: `[First observation recorded. Classification: Adaptation. Continue? [Yes] / [No]]`. She selects `[Yes]`.
